I am sure that most people do not realise how much rubbish is generated by used printer ink cartridges. Have you any idea at all how much used printer inkjet cartridges contribute to landfill? Surprisingly {18.000,000
Being the driest continent on the planet, Australians are acutely aware of the importance of water and the need to cut down on water the best we can. Households all over Australia are installing water tanks to help moderate the amount of water used from our reservoirs and dams. We have not, unfortunately, shown the same keenness for recycling printer cartridges. Why is this so? I would suggest that the lack of recycling of printer toner cartridges is most likely due to the lack of awareness of the impact of ink cartridges on the environment. A recent study shows that nearly 33% of consumers discard their empty toner cartridges in the normal waste bin and about 1 in 7 misguidedly place them in the council recycling bin, thinking that that will recycle them. The 1in 7 people that are putting their old ink cartridges in the recycling are attempting to be environmentally responsible, but they just haven't been educated the correct process to recycle printer inkjet cartridges. Unbeknown to consumers that are trying to do the right thing by placing their used toner cartridges in their normal recycling bin, the effects of having the wrong type of items in that bin has a big impact on the recycling process.

However printer toner cartridges can be recycled!

Planet Ark is an Australian not-for profit environmental organisation and has created a program called 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark', specifically for the recycling of printer ink cartridges. They are striving to ensure that there is zero waste (i.e. no landfill) for all of the inkjet cartridges that they collect through the program. It is simple to use, simply drop your used cartridges at one of the many drop off points, and they will do the rest. I would invite everyone (not just Australians) to think seriously about recycling your printer toner cartridges and at least try to help the environment and also save you some money. Recycled printer ink cartridges are not only good for the environment, but they also can save you money as they are cheaper, so everybody is a winner.
